As a Family Worker in our Partnership Program, I receive all sorts of kindnesses from our families. Children gift me with their artwork, songs, and stories. Moms bring me cookies and share their accomplishments with me.
I was reflecting on what extra, small things Mary Crane and I provide for our families that create the trusting relationship we have, and share a few stories here. One of my parents, Ms. Perez, was shopping one day and in her rush left her purse and phone on the counter. When she returned, they were gone. With no money in her pocket to get home, she came to me and I offered her a bus card. She was extremely grateful to have that support. Small, but mighty enough to change her day!
On another day, another mom, Ms. Ramos, had to get her three children home and it was a rainy and cold day. Her car battery had died and she didn’t know how she’d get home. Yet, she had found a way to come and see me for her Family Worker appointment. I was able to give Ms. Ramos the bus card she needed to get on the bus to take her kids home. She told me it gave her and her family a ray of hope.
Finally, I was able to connect another mom, Ms. Adu, with the Chicago Furniture Bank, a partnership of Mary Crane’s. On February 25, Ms. Adu and I went to the Bank and we received all the furniture her family needed for their home. She was so excited!
This is who Mary Crane is. Our team works together to go the extra mile and provide the kindnesses that change families’ lives. And, our families return these kindnesses in so many ways to us!
